Arunachal Pradesh is set to transform its energy system and economy with the Dibang Multipurpose Project. The Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein visited the project site to review its progress. This major project will have a capacity of 2880 MW, helping to improve the state’s energy supply and boost economic growth and connectivity.
During the visit, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein highlighted how important the project is for the state’s future. He said, “This project is a big step in using Arunachal Pradesh’s hydropower potential. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, we have revived many stalled projects and the Dibang project is a great example of what can be achieved through teamwork.”
Chowna Mein also pointed out that local communities and young people are key to the success of this project. He highlighted that these communities should benefit from it and that local contractors should be given a chance to work on the project whenever possible. He added, “This project is not just about power generation; it will create jobs, improve tourism and make life better for people in Arunachal Pradesh.”
The Deputy Chief Minister also talked about other important infrastructure developments linked to the project. These include a proposed water transport route from the dam site to Anini & a new bypass road to make transporting materials for the project easier.
R K Chaudhary, the Chief Managing Director of NHPC, shared some exciting news. He said that three units of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, each with a capacity of 250 MW, will be ready by the end of March 2025. The entire project will be completed by May 2026. He also mentioned that reports for two other hydroelectric projects, Kamle and Upper Kamle, have already been submitted.
After visiting the project site, Deputy Chief Minister Mein opened a new police station building in Dambuk, which will help improve law and order in the area. He also laid the foundation for the “Conservation of Bongal Yapgo War Memorial Heritage” project in Dambuk. This project will preserve the site of the 1894 Anglo-Abor War, where local warriors fought against British forces. The state government is committed to keeping the area’s history alive for future generations.
In a meeting with local leaders, Mein discussed Arunachal Pradesh’s ongoing development. He talked about new flights operating from Tezu, the upcoming Mechuka Airport, and the new Rupai to Parshuram Kund rail line. He also mentioned the ₹40,000 crore Frontier Highway project, which will improve border infrastructure and regional connectivity. Mein promised to approve the creation of an Electrical Subdivision at Dambuk and support other local infrastructure projects.
Finally, the Deputy Chief Minister stressed the importance of strengthening cultural ties with Assam, including celebrating Bhupen Hazarika’s 100th anniversary. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering the youth and supporting local development.
