The India International Science Festival (IISF) 2024 is set to host 25 events aimed at promoting science and technology among different sections of society. Among these, two key events—S&T Media Conclave and Vigyanika—stand out as essential platforms to bridge the gap between scientific innovation and the public. Both events are managed by the CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR), a member of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), which supports science communication in India.
The S&T Media Conclave 2024 and Vigyanika aim to promote dialogue among scientists, journalists, and media professionals on the importance of science communication and literacy. Planned for December 1-2, 2024, both events will feature diverse sessions, workshops, and interactive activities to engage audiences and promote innovative approaches to science dissemination.
The S&T Media Conclave will host six sessions across two days, covering topics such as:
- S&T Dissemination in North-East Media: Discussions on the challenges and opportunities of science communication in India’s northeastern states, featuring leaders and experts from the region.
- Impact of Science-Based Films: A session with National Award-winning filmmakers exploring how films can raise scientific awareness.
- Bridging the Gap: Methods to improve collaboration between scientific organizations and mass media, featuring one-on-one interactions on Day 1 and a panel discussion on Day 2.
To highlight the fun side of science communication, the event will also include a Science Mentalism Show that mixes science and magic.
Prominent dignitaries attending the conclave include:
- Dr. Arup Misra, Chairman, Pollution Control Board, Assam, and former Director of ASTEC.
- Dr. L. Minaketan Singh, Director, Manipur S&T Council.
- Shri Bhupendra Kainthola, Principal Director General, RNI & Former Director of FTII.
- Shri Pallav Bagla, renowned science journalist and former NDTV correspondent.
Running concurrently, Vigyanika will spotlight science communication through literature, focusing on journals, magazines, and creative formats. Key themes include:
- Science Writing in National and Local Languages: A workshop aimed at enhancing scientific writing skills in various languages.
- AI in Scientific Writing: A panel discussion on the transformative impact of AI on science writing.
- Interactive Communication Approaches: Workshops on engaging methods for sharing scientific knowledge.
The event will conclude with a Kavi Sammelan featuring science-themed poetry and a Science Puppet Show, blending art and science to inspire audiences.
