Vijayan Kutty G, a dedicated worker of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), was honored with the Shaurya Chakra on 26th January 2025, India's 76th Republic Day, in recognition of his bravery and ultimate sacrifice.
Born on 20th May 1975 in Kunnattoor village, Kollam District, Kerala, Vijayan joined BRO in October 1995 as a Pioneer. His hard work and commitment led to his promotion to Operator Equipment Machinery (OEM) in 2005. He served in tough locations across India and even in Bhutan, as part of a special mission called Project Dantak.
Vijayan’s most courageous moment came while working on a crucial road in Jammu and Kashmir. On 15th June 2024, he was operating a JCB Wheel Loader on the Reasi-Arnas-Mahore road, helping to build a bridge approach. Suddenly, the machine lost control and started rolling towards a valley. Despite the risk, Vijayan tried to regain control of the loader. Unfortunately, the ground beneath him gave way, and both the machine and Vijayan fell into the deep gorge below. Sadly, he was killed in the accident, but his bravery in trying to prevent the disaster was remarkable.
In recognition of his sacrifice and bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, on Republic Day 2025. His actions showed incredible courage, and his story will inspire others to serve the nation with the same dedication and determination.
Vijayan Kutty G’s sacrifice will be remembered forever, and his legacy will motivate future generations to face challenges with strength and courage. (PR)
