In a bid to promote sports and community engagement, the Indian Army, in collaboration with Ngariyan Sporting Club, successfully organized the 9th edition of the 6-A-Side Open Football Tournament in Andro, located in Imphal East district of Manipur. The month-long event saw participation from 16 teams, all vying for the prestigious trophy.
The tournament culminated in an intense final on October 7, 2024, where FC Yairipok Top Chigtha emerged victorious against FC Poiroukhongjin in a dramatic 2-1 penalty shootout. The high-energy match, followed by the exciting shootout, kept over 1,000 spectators from Andro and neighboring villages on the edge of their seats.
The closing ceremony was graced by Mr. Shyam Kumar, MLA of Andro Constituency, who attended as the Chief Guest. He presented the rolling trophies to both the winning and runner-up teams. In addition to the team awards, individual honors were also given, including recognition for the Man of the Match, the highest goal scorer, and the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
This event, facilitated by the Indian Army, highlighted the positive role of sports in bringing communities together and fostering unity in the region.(pr)
