The Indian Navy has taken another step forward in strengthening its fleet by beginning construction of its third Fleet Support Ship (FSS). On February 20, Rear Admiral Satish Shenai, along with senior officials from the Indian Navy, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), attended a special steel-cutting ceremony at L&T Shipyard in Kattupalli.
In August 2023, the Indian Navy signed an agreement with HSL to build five Fleet Support Ships, with the first expected to be delivered by mid-2027. To speed up the process and make the best use of India’s shipbuilding capabilities, HSL has assigned part of the work for two ships to L&T Shipyard. This collaboration highlights the successful partnership between the public and private sectors in India's defense industry.
These Fleet Support Ships, which weigh over 40,000 tons, will play a crucial role in keeping the Indian Navy operational for extended periods. They will carry essential supplies such as fuel, water, ammunition, and other materials to naval ships at sea, reducing the need for them to return to shore for replenishment. Additionally, these ships will be equipped to help in disaster relief efforts, allowing for quick evacuation of people and efficient delivery of emergency aid during natural calamities.
Designed entirely in India, with most parts sourced from local manufacturers, this project supports the Indian government's initiatives like Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, and Make for the World. By building these ships domestically, India is strengthening its self-reliance in shipbuilding and defense production, creating more opportunities for the country's industries and workforce. (PR)
