NHRC Investigates Odisha Woman's Suicide in Hyderabad
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has started an investigation into the suicide of a 25-year-old woman from Odisha in Hyderabad on November 27, 2024. The woman reportedly took her own life due to sexual harassment by a man in the Raidurgam area.
The woman had come to Hyderabad for a surrogacy deal arranged through middlemen, where she was promised Rs 10 lakh. She was living in a separate flat, away from her husband and their young son. According to reports, the woman called her husband on November 26, 2024, saying she could no longer stay there because of the harassment and was planning to end her life.
The NHRC has sent notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Telangana, asking for a detailed report on the case, including the current status of the FIR (First Information Report) filed. They have also asked if there have been any other complaints about women being harassed in the name of surrogacy in the state.
The NHRC’s action shows how serious the case is, especially since it involves the violation of the woman's rights. The investigation is focused on understanding how such exploitation and harassment could happen and making sure that similar incidents don’t happen again in the future.(PR)
