In a big step toward making technology more accessible to everyone, the Government of Tripura has signed an agreement with the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This partnership, guided by Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, will help promote the use of regional languages in Tripura and improve digital access for all citizens, regardless of their language.
The MOU was signed during a special workshop called 'Bhashini Rajyam' held at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala. The event was inaugurated by Shri Pranajit Singha Roy, the IT Minister of Tripura, with the presence of other key officials, including Shri Kiran Gitte, Secretary of IT for the state, and Shri Amitabh Nag, CEO of DIBD.
Bhashini is part of the larger Digital India program, and its goal is to make digital communication easier for people across India by supporting 22 Indian languages. This initiative focuses on using voice to connect people, especially those who may not be fluent in English or Hindi. By breaking down language barriers, Bhashini ensures that even citizens in remote areas can access digital services.
At the workshop, the capabilities of Bhashini were highlighted. The system can do things like translating speech to text, text to speech, and even translating voices between different languages. It uses advanced technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to make sure translations are accurate. The workshop also focused on how Tripura and DIBD can work together to use Bhashini to promote regional languages in government services and apps.
One of the challenges that many people in Tripura face, especially in rural and tribal areas, is the difficulty of using government services that are often only available in English or Hindi. With Bhashini, people will be able to use platforms like the CM Helpline, Kisan Sahayata App, and e-District services in their own languages. This technology will also help improve local services like Amar Sarkar and support law enforcement by translating police reports.
Tripura is the first state in the northeastern region, the first in eastern India, and the eighth state in India to sign the MOU with Bhashini. This is a huge achievement for the state and shows Tripura's commitment to making sure everyone can access government services, regardless of their language.
By including Bhashini in Tripura's e-governance systems, the state will make it easier for people to communicate with the government, access information, and participate in local governance. The MOU is a crucial step toward bridging the digital divide, giving people in Tripura a better chance to benefit from digital technologies and feel more connected to their government. Through this partnership, Tripura is setting an example of how technology can unite people and make society more inclusive. (PR)
