In a major effort to bring peace to Manipur, security forces helped in the surrender of 72 weapons. The Assam Rifles, Indian Army, Manipur Police, and other agencies worked together to make this happen. People in Jiribam, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Imphal East voluntarily gave up their weapons, showing trust in the security forces and their commitment to restoring stability in the region.
The surrendered weapons included a variety of firearms and explosives. In Kangpokpi district, 16 weapons, including rifles, a rocket launcher, and ammunition, were handed over. In Pherzawl and Jiribam, 30 weapons such as locally made rifles, a carbine machine gun, a shotgun, a tear gas gun, and improvised mortars were surrendered. In Imphal East’s Sagolmang region, nine weapons, including a carbine, a .303 rifle, and country-made rifles, were turned in. Additionally, a joint operation in Ningthoukhong led to the arrest of two people and the recovery of two weapons, including a pistol. Another 15 weapons, including an INSAS rifle, SLRs, and improvised mortars, were also surrendered, further reducing the number of illegal arms in circulation.
The security forces have been making continuous efforts to encourage individuals and groups to give up illegal weapons. The voluntary surrender of these weapons is a significant step towards peace and security in Manipur, where illegal firearms have been a cause of unrest for years. By working closely with local communities, authorities have been able to build trust and create an environment where people feel safe to hand over weapons without fear.
All collected weapons and ammunition have been handed over to the Manipur Police for further investigation and safe disposal. The Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and other security forces remain dedicated to maintaining peace and security through joint operations and collaborations with the local administration and communities. Their goal is to eliminate the threat of illegal weapons and ensure long-term stability in Manipur.
This development marks a major success in the ongoing fight against illegal arms possession. By reducing the availability of weapons, security forces are working towards preventing violence and fostering a peaceful environment for the people of Manipur. The initiative is expected to have a lasting impact on the region, encouraging more people to come forward and surrender illegal arms in the future. (PR)
