The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully tested a new Naval Anti-Ship Missile (NASM-SR) at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur. The missile, launched from a Seaking Helicopter, demonstrated its usefulness by precisely hitting a small target at sea.
This test showcased an advanced Man-in-Loop feature, allowing real-time changes to the missile’s target mid-flight through a two-way data link system. This means the pilot can adjust the target even after launching the rocket. The rocket is also provided with an Indigenous Imaging Infra-Red Seeker to ensure accuracy in hitting its target.
During the test, the missile was launched without a direct lock-on to any specific target. It first identified a large object in the area but later switched to a smaller hidden target, demonstrating its ability to adjust in real time.
The NASM-SR uses modern Indian technology, including a Fiber Optic Gyroscope-based Navigation System and a Radio Altimeter for better guidance. Other key features include an advanced avionics module, electronic actuators for control, thermal batteries, and a specially designed warhead. It uses a powerful solid-fuel propulsion system to ensure precise and long-range strikes.
The missile was developed by multiple DRDO research centers, including the Research Centre Imarat, Defence Research and Development Laboratory, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory. Its production involves MSMEs, start-ups, and other industry partners.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and industry collaborators on the successful test, emphasizing the importance of the Man-in-Loop feature in modern warfare. DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat also applauded the team for achieving this significant milestone.
This successful trial is a major step towards India’s self-reliance in defense technology, further strengthening the country’s naval capabilities. (PR)
