During the Parliament Budget Session 2025, Hon’ble MP (Lok Sabha) Shri S. Supongmeren Jamir spoke about the poor conditions of the Nagaland Village Guards and asked the Union Home Minister to take action.
On Wednesday, Jamir explained how these village guards protect 120 villages along the Indo-Myanmar border in six districts—Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Meluri, Noklak, and Longleng. They have been doing this important job since 1957. However, both the State Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs have not given them enough support.
He pointed out that the village guards receive very little money for their work. Their monthly salary is only Rs. 3,000, they get an annual clothing allowance of Rs. 100, and a monthly ration allowance of just Rs. 60. He said that such low payments make it very hard for them to continue their work effectively.
Jamir asked the government to improve the village guard system and send more guards to protect the border. Instead of building fences and restricting movement, he suggested strengthening the village guards to keep the area safe.
His speech in Parliament has started discussions about how the government can improve their salaries and working conditions while recognizing their important role in protecting the country. (PR)
