Wednesday, June 26, 2024: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, in a display of exceptional diplomatic acumen and strategic foresight, embarked on a momentous visit to Colombo on Thursday. This day-long sojourn marked his first bilateral engagement abroad since being reappointed in the newly installed coalition government, underscoring India's steadfast commitment to fostering robust bilateral relations with its neighbors.

EAM Jaishankar's visit was marked by a series of significant achievements that are set to enhance India-Sri Lanka cooperation across various sectors. A central highlight was his participation in a ceremony with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, where they jointly commissioned a state-of-the-art Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). This initiative, which includes a main center at the Colombo Naval Headquarters and sub-centers in strategic coastal locations, epitomizes the deepening maritime security collaboration between the two nations. President Wickremesinghe lauded this as a pivotal step in fortifying regional maritime safety, reflecting India's proactive role in the Colombo Security Conclave, an alliance that includes key Indian Ocean nations.

Jaishankar's visit also spotlighted the substantial progress on several pivotal energy sector initiatives. Discussions with Sri Lankan leadership focused on the proposed LNG supply, a petroleum pipeline linking the two countries, and advancing oil and gas exploration projects. Notably, the construction of the Sampur Solar Power Plant, scheduled to commence in July 2024, signals a major stride towards sustainable energy collaboration.

In a gesture highlighting India's commitment to humanitarian aid and infrastructure development, Jaishankar, alongside President Wickremesinghe, unveiled a digital plaque commemorating the inauguration of 106 houses constructed under the Indian Housing Project. This project spans the central Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Matale districts, as well as model villages in Colombo and Trincomalee, providing much-needed housing and uplifting local communities.

EAM Jaishankar's diplomatic engagements extended to productive meetings with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa, and representatives of various political factions, including those from the Tamil and Muslim communities. These discussions encompassed a wide range of issues, from enhancing efficiency in India-backed projects aimed at bolstering Sri Lanka's liquid milk industry and fertilizer production to addressing the political aspirations of the Tamil community.

This visit also saw Jaishankar addressing strategic economic and development projects, including those in Trincomalee and the Kankesanthurai port. These discussions are poised to bring about significant advancements in Sri Lanka's infrastructure, driven by Indian support.

EAM Jaishankar's Colombo visit stands as a testament to his exemplary leadership and India's unwavering dedication to nurturing a prosperous and secure regional neighborhood. His

initiatives not only reinforce bilateral ties but also pave the way for greater regional stability and cooperation, heralding a new chapter in India-Sri Lanka relations.
