A significant milestone was reached today at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong) as the convocation ceremony for the inaugural Management Essentials 2024 course, offered by MILVEST, took place. This pioneering program marked the successful completion of a transformative journey for its participants from the Indian Armed Forces community, including serving and retired personnel, their spouses, and adult children.
The ceremony was graced by Air Marshal Surat Singh, AOC-in-C, Eastern Air Command, who presented the graduates with certificates of accomplishment. The Management Essentials 2024 course is part of MILVEST’s (Military Veterans Skilling and Transformation) efforts to address the growing need for reskilling among the armed forces community. The course helps participants transition smoothly from military to civilian roles, providing them with the necessary skills for career development and resettlement.
MILVEST, an initiative by the Sambhav Kadam Foundation, aims to redefine how veterans and their families prepare for second careers. In collaboration with IIM Shillong, the Management Essentials program offers a blend of elite education and flexibility, delivered through online webinars and seminars tailored specifically for serving and retired military personnel.
Participants of the program spoke highly of its structured approach, which included recorded sessions, pre-reads, quizzes, and assignments. The course was designed to be affordable, ensuring it was accessible to all members of the military community. Additionally, the program offered a comprehensive learning experience through professional activities, including visits to industry platforms such as LinkedIn and an HR seminar with industry leaders.
Air Marshal Surat Singh, in his address during the ceremony, emphasized the significance of the Management Essentials program. He said, “This initiative equips our soldiers and their families with valuable skills while highlighting our shared responsibility to support their transition with dignity and purpose.”
The event also marked the announcement of MILVEST 2025, an expanded version of the program. This new edition introduces initiatives like Corporate and Industry Orientation (CIO) and offers specialized short-duration programs in areas such as strategic HR, marketing, supply chain analytics, and entrepreneurship.
With 60,000 military personnel retiring annually, Captain (IN) Vinay Singh, the founder of MILVEST, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to equipping veterans with the skills necessary to succeed as leaders and innovators in civilian careers. He also expressed gratitude to the Eastern Air Command AC and IIM Shillong for their unwavering support in making the convocation day a reality. (pr)
