In a remarkable achievement, two Indian Navy officers, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A, successfully crossed Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America, aboard INSV Tarini. This milestone was part of the Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition, which aims to promote ocean sailing and encourage women’s participation in the Indian Navy.
Sailing past Cape Horn is considered one of the most difficult challenges for sailors worldwide. The officers had to navigate through the Drake Passage, a stretch of ocean known for its extremely rough conditions. They faced strong winds blowing at nearly 75 kmph (40 knots), heavy rains, and massive waves rising over five meters high. The unpredictable weather and dangerous sea currents in this region have tested even the most experienced sailors throughout history.
Cape Horn is located about 800 kilometers (432 nautical miles) from Antarctica, making it one of the closest land points to the icy continent. This means the waters here are not only rough but also freezing cold, adding to the difficulty of the journey. By successfully crossing Cape Horn under sail, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A have earned the prestigious title of “Cape Horners.” This title is given only to a select group of sailors who have braved these dangerous waters and completed the journey successfully.
