Mr. Pramod Boro, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in Assam, addressed a “Meet the Press” programme organized by the North East Media Forum (NEMF) at the Press Club of India on Saturday. This event marked the first “Meet the Press” programme by the NEMF since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Boro was warmly received by NEMF President Sanjib Baruah, General Secretary Pranjal Pratim Das, and other members of the Forum. The programme was moderated by Sachin Gogoi.

In his address, Boro discussed various issues, including the challenges facing the BTR, his vision for the region, the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and the situation in Manipur.

Criticizing the previous Congress government in Assam, Boro remarked, “Because of the instability (in BTR) for a long time there was no development. The previous government did not have any plan for the region (BTR).” He emphasized that the situation has improved under the BJP-led government, stating, “We are working together under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He has a good vision. We need to develop the region.”

Highlighting the economic challenges in BTR, Boro said, “Economic and livelihood is a big challenge in our region. We are trying to skill our youths so that they can become entrepreneurs.” He also stressed the importance of education as a primary focus.

Boro noted improvements in the law and order situation in BTR, mentioning that the recent Lok Sabha elections were conducted peacefully, without bloodshed for the first time in decades. “This is the first election (Lok Sabha) after three to four decades, where there was no bloodshed. This time for the first time, the people voted without any fear,” he said.

When questioned about the Manipur issue, Boro described it as “a very sensitive issue” and urged all communities to seek reconciliation. “I request every community to rethink. Still, we have time for reconciliation,” he stated.

The event provided a platform for Boro to share his insights and plans for the future development of the BTR, addressing both local and national concerns. (PR)
