Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurates Sagarmanthan: India Leads Global Maritime Dialogue

The Great Oceans Dialogue, South Asia's largest maritime thought leadership forum, kicks off today in India. Organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), the event gathers global leaders, policymakers, business magnates, and maritime experts to discuss and shape actionable strategies for a sustainable and efficient marine sector.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, highlights the significance of the forum, stating, Sagarmanthan is an opportunity to celebrate the best available maritime knowledge, with experts sharing valuable insights on emerging trends. Since 2014, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India cements its role as a key maritime player, and this platform facilitates crucial dialogue on harnessing the potential of the Blue Economy.
The two-day dialogue focuses on topics such as inclusive growth, sustainability, and resilient communities, aiming to establish a shared vision for a robust global maritime economy. The forum is structured around four key themes: New Frontiers,Blue Growth,Green and Blue, and Coasts & Communities. Discussions cover connectivity, infrastructure development, sustainability, innovation, maritime governance, and the social impact of maritime activities.
Shantanu Thakur, Union Minister of State for MoPSW, emphasizes India’s commitment to integrating economic growth with environmental stewardship, stating, “We are setting the course for a blue economy that is inclusive, future-oriented, and prepared to address the challenges ahead.”
International leaders attending the event include Christos Stylianides, Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs; Amzath Ahmed, Minister of State for Fisheries, Maldives; and John Kayode Fayemi, Pioneer President of the Forum of Regions of Africa, Nigeria. Over 60 countries are represented, with participation from ministers, former heads of state, journalists, and maritime professionals.
Keynote speakers include Yuvraj Narayan, Deputy CEO and CFO of DP World, who addresses the future of trade routes, and Rizwan Soomar, CEO & MD of DP World, who discusses trade connectivity. Arjun Chowgule, President of the Indian Shipyards Association, highlights India’s role as a global hub for shipbuilding. Signe Brudeset, Director General of the Regional Department at Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Samir Saran, President of ORF, also contribute their expertise.
Ahead of the forum, Dr. Samir Saran stresses the importance of such a dialogue, saying, “India stands at a crucial crossroads, with both the opportunity and responsibility to influence the global maritime agenda through strategic partnerships.”
The event promises to drive critical discussions on the Blue Economy, maritime logistics, ports, shipping, shipbuilding, labor standards, and sustainability. As India strengthens its position in the global maritime sector, Sagarmanthan serves as a crucial platform for shaping the future of the global maritime landscape.
With an impressive lineup of speakers and a broad international presence, Sagarmanthan is set to be a landmark event, advancing key conversations on maritime issues of global importance. (PR)
