The Indian Army is poised to commemorate the 62nd Walong Day, honoring the indomitable courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought valiantly in the Battle of Walong during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The celebrations will kick off on 17 October 2024 with a solemn opening ceremony and a wreath-laying at the Walong War Memorial, a site dedicated to the memory of the brave souls who laid down their lives defending the nation.

This year's observance will not only serve as a poignant tribute to the past but also a vibrant celebration of the gallant spirit of the Indian Army. The meticulously planned month-long events aim to commemorate historical sacrifices while actively engaging local communities and promoting nation-building.

A series of activities is lined up, including battlefield treks, a car rally, medical and veterinary camps, adventure treks, and cycle and motorcycle expeditions. A notable highlight will be a Half Marathon that culminates at Walong, symbolizing the unwavering spirit and dedication of the Indian Army. Each event reflects the Army's commitment to preserving the memory of its fallen heroes while fostering community engagement and patriotism.

The Battle of Walong remains a testament to the sheer bravery and determination displayed by Indian Army soldiers, particularly those from the 6 KUMAON, 4 SIKH, 2/8 Gorkha Rifles, 3/3 Gorkha Rifles, and 4 DOGRA regiments. These soldiers faced severe logistical challenges in the harsh terrains of Arunachal Pradesh, displaying unparalleled gallantry and making the enemy pay dearly for every inch of ground. Their courage, even in the face of overwhelming odds, is forever etched in the annals of Indian military history.

As the celebrations unfold, the Indian Army extends an invitation to all citizens to join in the festivities with renewed enthusiasm and 'josh' (spirit), honoring the legacy of those who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation. The 62nd Walong Day promises to be a heartfelt tribute to the heroes of Walong, ensuring their stories of bravery continue to inspire future generations.(PR)
