The Chakhesang Students' Union (CSU) has initiated the first phase of agitation following an ultimatum issued on October 16, 2024, regarding the deteriorating condition of the Kohima-Jessami road, specifically the Chakhabama-Kikruma stretch under Package-II. The CSU has expressed dissatisfaction with the repair and maintenance work undertaken by the concerned authorities, stating that it is far below expectations.
During a site visit on October 19, the CSU found that the road repair efforts were inadequate, despite their earlier demands. The situation was discussed in the 2nd Union Assembly of the CSU, held on the same day at Pfutsero College Auditorium, which led to a unanimous decision to launch an indefinite agitation.
In a statement released by CSU President Pfhulo Sara and General Secretary Kuzoto Swuro, dated 21st October 2024, the union announced that they have sealed the office of the Project Management Unit (PMU) of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) in Pfutsero.
The CSU has outlined several demands that must be met before the agitation is called off. These include:
1. Clearing of all landslides and other obstacles obstructing vehicular movement.
2. Immediate filling and repair of all potholes along the road.
3. Installation of a proper drainage system for the stretch.
4. Termination of the contract with Ratna Infra Projects Pvt. Ltd., as recommended by the Phek district PMU in June 2024.

The students' union warned that failure to meet these demands will result in further action against both the implementing agency and the contractor.
The agitation is aimed at addressing the long-standing grievances of commuters and residents, who have endured dangerous road conditions on this vital route. The CSU has emphasized that this action is necessary to ensure accountability from the authorities responsible for the road's upkeep.
The notice of agitation has been officially communicated to various stakeholders, including the Deputy Commissioner of Phek, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Pfutsero, and the Executive Director of NHIDCL in Kohima. A copy has also been sent to Ratna Infra Projects Pvt. Ltd., the contractor responsible for the road's maintenance under Package II.
The CSU's bold stance has gained attention from local organizations such as the Chakhesang Public Organization, Chakhesang Youth Front, and Chakhesang Mothers Association, all of whom have extended their support. Local media have been notified, and the situation is being closely monitored.
As the agitation begins, residents of the affected areas are hopeful for swift action to address the hazardous conditions on this key transportation route. (PR)
