The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), flagged off a cycling expedition from Namsai to Namti today, as part of a month-long commemoration of the 62nd Walong Day. The event honours the brave soldiers who fought during the historic Battle of Walong in 1962.

Shri Chowna Mein, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, presided over the event as the chief guest, launching the expedition at Namsai. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Shri Pasang Dorjee Sona, Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Dasunglu Pul, Minister of Women and Child Development and Science, senior officials from the Indian Army, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), local government officials, NCC cadets, and youth from Namsai and Tezu.

Sixty-two cyclists, symbolizing the 62nd anniversary, will traverse the scenic landscapes of the Lohit Valley over three days. The journey began at the Golden Pagoda in Namsai, passing through Wakro, Parshuram Kund, and Hayuliang, and culminating at Namti, a site of historical significance where Indian Army troops held off adversary advances in 1962. Namti, also referred to as the "Tigers Mouth," remains a symbol of national pride.

The expedition comprises a diverse group of participants, including Indian Army personnel, lady officers, ITBP representatives, youth from Arunachal Pradesh, and two cyclists from Pune. Throughout the journey, cyclists will engage with local communities and soak in the beauty of the Lohit Valley, while also paying homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

The Indian Army reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the Lohit Valley as a key tourism destination and empowering local youth through infrastructure development and skill-building initiatives.

“Together, let us pedal towards a healthier and more vibrant future while honouring the legacy of our brave soldiers,” the Army emphasized in a statement. (PR)
