The 3rd edition of the Lt Col Robert T.A. Memorial Badminton Tournament, organized by the Indian Army under Operation Sadbhavana, successfully concluded on 27 September 2024 with a grand closing ceremony at the Rikhumai Tophou Indoor Badminton Hall, Senapati district, Manipur. The event, held in memory of the late Lieutenant Colonel Robert T.A., paid tribute to the first officer from the Maram Naga community to join the Indian Army. Lt Col Robert was commissioned into an Engineer Regiment in 2004 and made the ultimate sacrifice on 14 May 2020 during a snow clearance expedition in North Sikkim, where he led his team through an avalanche.
The five-day tournament, which commenced on 23 September, saw participation from 210 men and women across various age groups. Over 170 matches were played in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles categories, highlighting the competitive spirit of the local youth and sports enthusiasts.
The closing ceremony witnessed the final matches of the men's singles and women's doubles categories. Mrs. Chingpai Rangnamei, wife of the late Lt Col Robert, graced the occasion along with senior Army officers and other distinguished guests. Winners and runners-up were awarded trophies and prizes, recognizing their outstanding performances.
The tournament received widespread praise from the local community, who appreciated the Indian Army’s efforts to organize an event that not only honored a fallen hero but also promoted sports and fitness in the region. The initiative provided an excellent platform for the youth of Senapati district to showcase their talent, further strengthening the bond between the Army and the local population.
The Indian Army, through such initiatives, continues to reaffirm its commitment to fostering a culture of sportsmanship while honoring its brave soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.(pr)
