DCM Chowna Mein Hoists 72ft National Flag in Mechukha, Approves 4.5 MW Hydropower Project

Organized by the 13 Grenadiers of the Indian Army, the event highlighted national pride, regional development, and military contributions to the Mechukha Valley’s growth.

In a significant event marked by patriotism and progress, the Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, accompanied by GoC 3 Corps Lt. General Abhijit Pendharkar, Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, Major General Akash Johar, and other dignitaries, hoisted a 72-foot-high National Flag in Mechukha on 6th January 2025. The event was organized by the 13 Grenadiers (Ganga Jaisalmer) of the Indian Army, symbolizing national pride, security, and unity.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Chief Minister expressed profound gratitude to the Indian Army, particularly the 13 Grenadiers and the ITBP, for their contributions to the region’s security and development. He commended their efforts in fostering social and economic upliftment in the Mechukha Valley.

During his speech, he announced the approval of a 4.5 MW hydropower project on the Yargyapchu River to address the power requirements of Mechukha township.

Inspections of Development Projects

The Deputy Chief Minister’s five-day visit to Mechukha was marked by a series of inspections and reviews of key infrastructure and development projects:

Lamang Border Visit: Highlighting its strategic importance, he toured the Lamang Border.

Hydropower Project: Inspected the proposed site for the 4.5 MW Hydropower Project on the Yargyapchu River.

Infrastructure Development: Reviewed the under-construction bridge over Thargelling village and the PMGSY road connecting Thargelling.

Rainbow Trout Hatchery Farm: Visited the trout hatchery at Dechenthang, emphasizing efforts to boost local aquaculture.

The Deputy Chief Minister also toured cultural and religious landmarks, including the New Gompa, Samten Yangchag Monastery (Old Gompa), Neh-Pema Shelphu Drupkhang, and the Gurudwara at Tapo Asthan.

13 Grenadiers’ Role in Mechukha

The 13 Grenadiers, one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most distinguished battalions, has been stationed in Mechukha since October 2021. With a legacy dating back to 1465 as part of the Bikaner State Forces, the battalion has ensured the security of the region while actively contributing to its development through various operation Sadbhavana (goodwill) projects.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of notable officials, including Commissioner of Education Amzad Tak, Superintendent of Police S.K. Thongdok, and ADC Mechukha Tana Yaho, further underlining the significance of the event for the region.

This visit emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering development, improving infrastructure, and promoting cultural heritage in Mechukha, ensuring a brighter future for its residents.(pr)
