In a wonderful demonstration of skill and perseverance, seven girls from the isolated parts of Rajouri and Poonch have earned their place in the Jammu and Kashmir State Volleyball Teams, thanks to an initiative led by the Indian Army.

The volleyball coaching program, established on August 29, 2024, aspired to empower young women in the impoverished South Pir Panjal region through sports. Developed to promote athleticism, self-esteem, and leadership skills, the program is a notable step toward encouraging gender equality and societal change in these remote areas.

The Indian Army structured an intensive training curriculum for 30 passionate and gifted girls from the region. Professional coaches from J&K sports authorities, along with physiotherapists, conducted sessions focusing on basic volleyball skills, game strategies, and physical fitness.

Out of the initial 30 participants, 19 girls were picked to compete in district-level volleyball tournaments and selection trials in three age categories: U-19, U-17, and U-14. From there, 15 girls advanced to represent their districts at the Jammu Division level.

The program’s success culminated in the selection of seven girls to represent Jammu and Kashmir at national-level volleyball tournaments: U-19 Category-Three girls, U-17 Category-One girl, U-14 Category- Three girls.

This accomplishment not only emphasizes their athletic skill but also reflects the efficacy of the Indian Army’s coaching program.

Beyond sports, the initiative has begun to turn societal perspectives toward women and their role in athletics in the region. By supporting the growth and development of these young girls, the Indian Army has shown the transformative ability of sports as a means for social change.

The volleyball coaching program serves as a beacon of hope, breaking barriers and fostering a sense of empowerment among young women in the Pir Panjal region. It also underscores the army’s commitment to community development and gender equality, proving that targeted initiatives can have a profound impact on underprivileged communities.

This program is not just about volleyball; it’s about equipping these young women with skills and confidence that will benefit them throughout their lives. By nurturing their potential, the Indian Army is helping to pave the way for a brighter future in the region, both on and off the court. (PR)
