Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini has successfully reached Fremantle, Australia, on November 9, 2024, after a grueling 39-day voyage across 4,900 nautical miles of open sea. This marks the first port of call in the global circumnavigation expedition known as Navika Sagar Parikrama II. The historic voyage, flagged off by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, from Goa on October 2, is a testament to the spirit of resilience and commitment displayed by its two-woman crew.

The expedition, led by Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A, has taken the sailors across the Equator on October 16 and through the Tropic of Capricorn on October 27. Encountering a wide range of weather conditions, including winds reaching up to 40 knots and rough seas with a sea state of 6, the crew demonstrated remarkable endurance. Throughout the journey, they maintained their health and high spirits, exemplifying the strength and skill required for such a demanding mission.

Indian Navy officials, including the Chief of the Naval Staff, have been in close contact with the crew, receiving daily updates on their progress. On the eve of Diwali, the CNS held a morale-boosting interaction with the crew, commending their dedication and motivation.

Upon INSV Tarini’s arrival in Fremantle, the sailors were met with a warm welcome. Attendees included the Consul General of India in Perth, Defence Advisor from Canberra, the Secretary of the Indian Navy Sailing Association (INSA), and representatives from the Royal Australian Navy. The Tamil Association of Western Australia added a cultural touch to the occasion, performing traditional music with Parai and Kombu Tharai drums, symbolizing India’s rich heritage.

Navika Sagar Parikrama II, an ambitious initiative aimed at promoting gender equality, sustainability, and international maritime cooperation, is the latest in India’s efforts to showcase its maritime heritage and capabilities. With a mission to connect with global maritime communities, the expedition emphasize India’s dedication to inclusive global engagement.

As INSV Tarini prepares for its next leg, the success of this first stop highlights the dedication and resilience of the crew, setting the tone for the remaining journey.(pr)
