The Indian Navy has bolstered its hydrographic survey fleet with the delivery of “Nirdeshak” (Yard 3026), the second vessel in a series of four Survey Vessels (Large) being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. This state-of-the-art vessel, developed under the guidance of the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, will enhance the Navy's capabilities in both coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys.

The “Nirdeshak” was delivered on 8th October 2024 following extensive sea and harbour trials. It is the second vessel in the class, following the commissioning of its sister ship, “INS Sandhayak”, on 3rd February 2024. These vessels are being constructed under a contract signed on 30th October 2018, with the keel for “Nirdeshak” laid on 1st December 2020 and the ship launched on 26th May 2022.

At 110 meters long and displacing approximately 3,400 tons, “Nirdeshak” is equipped with advanced hydrographic systems, including data acquisition and processing systems, autonomous underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles, DGPS long-range positioning systems, and digital side scan sonar. These technologies enable it to conduct detailed surveys of port and harbour approaches, as well as oceanographic and geophysical data collection for both defence and civil applications. Powered by two diesel engines, the vessel can reach speeds exceeding 18 knots.

With over 80% of the ship's components sourced from within India, the delivery of “Nirdeshak” underscores the nation's commitment to self-reliance, a cornerstone of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The collaboration between the Indian Navy, GRSE, MSMEs, and other stakeholders highlights India's growing maritime capabilities, particularly in the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region.

The successful delivery of “Nirdeshak” represents a significant achievement for the Indian Navy and its continued focus on enhancing maritime security and infrastructure.(pr)
