In a remarkable display of resilience and coordination, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully rescued two foreign mountaineers stranded on the treacherous slopes of Chaukhamba III peak in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. The climbers, identified as Michelle from the United States and Fay Jane from the United Kingdom, were airlifted to safety after enduring two days of adverse weather conditions.

The mountaineers, who were reported missing on October 3, 2024, during their expedition on the 18,500-foot peak, were located after an intensive three-day search operation. Despite challenging weather and low visibility, the rescue efforts were initiated on foot, with helicopter support deployed the following day on October 4. Two IAF Cheetah helicopters, piloted by Wing Commander Girish Boldara and Squadron Leader Anshul Singh, played a pivotal role in airlifting the mountaineers from an altitude of 17,400 feet.

The rescue mission was a joint effort involving the Indian Air Force, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), and a team of French mountaineers. The IAF's Cheetah helicopters, known for their high-altitude capabilities, proved essential in navigating the hazardous terrain of the Himalayas. Despite the harsh conditions, the IAF crew demonstrated exceptional skill in executing the mission.

The mountaineers were reported to be in distress due to extreme weather and the challenging terrain. With the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams, the mountaineers were safely evacuated and are now receiving medical attention. The operation has been hailed as a testament to the bravery and expertise of all involved, particularly the Indian Air Force, whose timely intervention was crucial in averting a potential tragedy.

This daring rescue reinforced the critical role of the Indian Air Force in humanitarian operations, particularly in the perilous and remote regions of the Himalayas. The successful mission highlights the preparedness and capability of the IAF, SDRF, and NIM in conducting high-risk rescue missions in one of the most unforgiving environments in the world.
