The Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region (SPUNER) successfully hosted the 78th Independence Day Badminton Tournament at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from August 8 to 9, 2024. This event was part of the broader strategic directives set forth in the Standing Order and the 100-day action plan mandated by the Commissioner of Delhi Police.

The tournament saw participation from 80 individuals representing North Eastern States, the Gorkha community of Darjeeling, and Ladakhis residing in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). This gathering aimed to foster unity and oneness among these diverse communities, providing a platform to connect individuals often scattered across different parts of the capital.

More than just a sporting event, the tournament sought to strengthen community ties, encourage the sharing of experiences, and build lasting relationships among participants. The competition was intense, with Kadunguang Kamai and Thongam Thoithoiba Meitei emerging as the winners. The runners-up, R Lalduhawma and Vanlalawmpuia, also displayed remarkable skill, making the finals a closely contested affair.

The event was graced by the presence of several distinguished officers and leaders, including Shri Ajay Chaudhry IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, who served as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Shri PN Khrimey IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, SPUWAC/SPUNER, and Shri Joram Maivio, a member of the Monitoring Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Their attendance underscored the Delhi Police's commitment to community engagement and the welfare of individuals from the North East, Darjeeling, and Ladakh.

In his address, Shri Ajay Chaudhry highlighted the importance of such events in fostering unity and togetherness among these communities in Delhi. He reaffirmed the Delhi Police's dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all. Shri PN Khrimey echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the role of cultural and social integration in building mutual respect and understanding among different communities.

Participants also expressed their gratitude. Rocky Angumei, Pastor of Church of Hope, and Aphang, Assistant Professor at Maitreyi College, both spoke on behalf of the players, thanking SPUNER for organizing the tournament. They highlighted the significance of such initiatives in fostering a sense of belonging and unity.

The tournament concluded with the awarding of trophies and certificates, celebrating not only the winners but also the spirit of community and unity. This event was one of many initiatives undertaken by SPUNER as part of its mission to support and uplift the communities it serves, demonstrating the power of sports in building bridges and fostering a united community in line with the spirit of Independence Day.
