On January 30, 2025, Shri Shantanu Thakur, Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, launched two important programs in Mumbai to help seafarers, especially women. The programs are called “Sagar Mein Yog – Complete Wellness Programme” and “Sagar Mein Samman.” These initiatives are designed to support female seafarers, who often face challenges while working far from home.
Shri Thakur explained that women seafarers play a key role in India’s maritime strength and should be celebrated for their hard work. He also mentioned that yoga could help seafarers stay healthy and balanced while they are at sea. The “Sagar Mein Samman” program aims to empower and recognize women in the maritime industry, while the “Sagar Mein Yog” program will teach yoga and wellness practices to seafarers before, during, and after their time at sea. This will help them stay fit and resilient.
Shri Shyam Jaganathan, Director General of Shipping, also spoke about the Prime Minister’s Maritime India Vision 2030, which aims to improve the lives of seafarers and raise the global status of India’s maritime industry.
The “Sagar Mein Yog” program will focus on improving the health of seafarers, reducing medical emergencies, and lowering healthcare costs. By doing this, it will help create a better working environment for seafarers and ensure they are well-supported throughout their careers.
The event was attended by seafarers and other important people in the maritime industry, all agreeing that these new programs will make a big difference in the lives of seafarers.
In short, India is taking steps to support its seafarers, especially women, and make sure they are recognized, healthy, and empowered in their important roles. (PR)
