Northeastern India has been left reeling in the wake of Cyclone Remal, which has claimed at least 36 lives and brought normal life to a standstill with heavy rains and landslides on Tuesday.
The relentless downpour has triggered landslides, uprooted trees, and knocked down electric poles, resulting in widespread power and internet outages.
Mizoram has been the worst affected state, with 27 fatalities reported. Among these, 21 people tragically lost their lives in a quarry collapse in the Aizawl district. The state of Nagaland has also suffered significant losses, with four deaths and over 40 houses severely damaged.
Assam has reported three deaths and 17 injuries across the Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), and Morigaon districts. In Meghalaya, the heavy rains have claimed two lives and injured more than 100 people. Meanwhile, Tripura has faced severe weather conditions, with gusty winds of 50 to 60 km per hour damaging 470 houses and displacing 750 residents. These displaced residents are now taking refuge in 15 relief camps set up across the state.
The Northeast Frontier Railway has also been severely impacted by the cyclone, with numerous trains canceled, partially canceled, or rescheduled due to waterlogging under the Lumding division.
In Arunachal Pradesh, authorities remain on high alert as the India Meteorological Department has forecasted extremely heavy rainfall. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has urged residents to take all necessary precautions and avoid vulnerable areas.
The entire northeastern region is grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. Rescue and relief operations are currently underway as authorities work tirelessly to restore normalcy and provide assistance to the affected populations. (IANS)
