Honoring Heroes: 7th Hangpan Dada Memorial Trophy Inaugurated DCM Chowna Mein in Namsai

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein inaugurated the 7th edition of the State-level Hangpan Dada Memorial Tournament for U-16 boys and girls in football and volleyball. The tournament, organized by the Department of Sports, honors Havildar Hangpan Dada, who was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his bravery. Mein emphasized the government's commitment to youth sports and announced the construction of new sports infrastructure, including national-standard stadiums in Namsai and Chongkham. The event was attended by several prominent state leaders and officials.

The 7th edition of the State-level Hangpan Dada Memorial Tournament 2023-24 for Football and Volleyball (U-16 Boys and Girls) officially commenced today at the General Ground in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh. The tournament, organized by the Department of Sports, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, in collaboration with the Namsai District Administration, was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Shri Chowna Mein, who graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest.
Formerly known as the Chief Minister's Trophy for Football and Volleyball, the tournament was renamed in 2017 in honor of Hangpan Dada, a Havildar from Tirap district who made the ultimate sacrifice during a fierce encounter with terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir. Dada eliminated three terrorists in close combat, a feat of bravery that posthumously earned him India's highest military honor, the Ashok Chakra, on Republic Day 2017.
During the inaugural ceremony, Mein, along with other dignitaries, paid floral tributes to Ashok Chakra awardee Hangpan Dada, recalling his unparalleled courage and service to the nation.
In his address, Mein congratulated the district-level winners who qualified to compete at the state-level tournament. He emphasized the importance of sports in fostering holistic development and fitness among youth and reiterated the Arunachal Pradesh government's commitment to supporting young athletes.
"The government will continue to provide additional funds beyond the current budget to the Sports Department to further encourage our youth in sports. We have declared 2024 as the 'Year of Youth,'" said Mein.
He also announced the upcoming construction of a multi-purpose outdoor stadium at General Ground, Namsai, and two national-standard football stadiums in Namsai and Chongkham, which will create a robust infrastructure for sports training and competitions, potentially hosting national events in the future.
Mein further highlighted plans for a state-level football tournament to be organized by the Arunachal Football Federation in honor of Late Indrajit Namchoom, the state's first national football player.
Expressing pride in the capabilities of Arunachal Pradesh’s young talents, Mein assured that the government would leave no stone unturned in nurturing and supporting budding athletes.
The event was attended by several notable dignitaries, including Health Minister Biyuram Wahge, Minister for Women & Child Development Smt. Dasunglu Pul, Minister for Sports Shri Kento Jini, MLAs Shri Ninong Ering, Shri Chau Zingnu Namchoom, Shri Dr. Mohesh Chai, Shri Mopi Mihu, Shri Puinnyo Apum, Shri Likha Soni, and others. (PR)
