The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, to procure 149 Software Defined Radios (SDRs) for the Indian Coast Guard. This deal, worth ₹1220.12 crores, is part of the government's push to manufacture defence equipment within India under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.
These advanced radios will greatly improve the Indian Coast Guard's ability to communicate securely and efficiently. They will allow for a fast and safe exchange of voice and data, providing better coordination during important missions. These radios will be particularly useful for operations such as maritime law enforcement, search and rescue missions, protecting fisheries and conserving the marine environment. Additionally, they will enhance collaboration between the Coast Guard and the Indian Navy, making joint operations smoother and more effective.
This deal is a crucial step in supporting India's maritime security while also supporting the Government of India's Blue Economy initiative, which focuses on the sustainable use of ocean resources. It also aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which promotes self-reliance in defence production.
