New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, along with Rear Admiral Garin Golding, Chief of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), visited the Indian Navy’s newest warship, INS Surat, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. They were warmly welcomed by Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Western Naval Command (WNC).

INS Surat is a modern guided-missile destroyer, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Mumbai. Commissioned on January 15, 2025, it highlights India’s self-reliance in defense production, with over 75% of its components made in India under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The New Zealand delegation received a detailed tour and briefing on the ship’s advanced technology and capabilities.

The visit coincided with the arrival of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s warship, HMNZS Te Kaha, in Mumbai from March 20 to 24. Additionally, Commodore Rodger Ward, Commander of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, is also visiting the Western Naval Command headquarters, further strengthening naval ties between India and New Zealand.

During the visit, Rear Admiral Golding met with Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh to discuss naval cooperation and regional security. He also toured the Heritage Hall at the Naval Dockyard and held discussions regarding technical support for HMNZS Te Kaha’s next visit in April. A wreath-laying ceremony was also held at Gaurav Stambh to honor naval personnel who sacrificed their lives to serve the nation.

To strengthen cooperation, various activities such as ship visits, sports events, and social gatherings have been planned. Before departing, HMNZS Te Kaha will participate in a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with the Indian Navy, enhancing coordination and demonstrating both nations’ commitment to maritime security.

This visit marks an essential step in strengthening India-New Zealand naval relations and reaffirms their shared commitment to peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region. (PR)
