Indian Navy: Heroes of the Sea Lead Rescue Operations After Tragic Collision in Mumbai Harbour

Search and Rescue (SAR) operations led by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Police have rescued 99 survivors, but the incident resulted in the loss of 13 lives, including one Navy personnel and two OEM representatives. Extensive efforts are underway to account for all missing persons.

At approximately 1600 hours today, an Indian Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with the passenger ferry Neel Kamal off Karanja, Mumbai. The ferry, carrying passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, was significantly damaged in the collision.

Search and Rescue (SAR) operations were immediately launched by the Indian Navy, in coordination with the Coast Guard and Marine Police. The Indian Navy has deployed four helicopters, 11 naval craft, one Coast Guard boat, and three Marine Police boats to ensure the safe evacuation and rescue of all passengers and crew involved in the incident.

As of now, 99 survivors have been rescued and transferred to nearby jetties and hospitals for medical treatment. Tragically, the collision has resulted in the loss of 13 lives, including one Navy personnel and two representatives from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) who were aboard the Navy craft for engine trials. SAR efforts to locate any missing persons are ongoing, and all personnel are being accounted for.

Expressing deep grief over the incident, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said:

“Deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives in the collision between the passenger ferry and the Indian Navy craft in Mumbai Harbour. Injured personnel, including naval personnel and civilians from both vessels, are receiving urgent medical care. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Extensive search and rescue efforts are ongoing by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, deploying multiple assets, to locate missing persons.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also extended his condolences to the victims’ families and announced financial assistance for those affected by the tragedy.

The Indian Navy has extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and assured that all possible assistance will be provided. The Navy is working closely with the Coast Guard, Marine Police, and state authorities to address the aftermath of this tragic incident. Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the accident.

The Indian Navy remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring safety at sea and will continue its rescue efforts until every affected individual is accounted for. Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
