The Indian Navy marked a significant milestone in its naval capabilities with the launch of ‘Abhay’, the seventh Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). The launch ceremony took place at the L&T shipyard in Kattupalli and was presided over by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (East). The ship was ceremonially launched by Mrs. Sandhya Pendharkar, President of the Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), Eastern Region, in line with maritime traditions.
The contract for the construction of eight ASW SWC ships was signed between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and GRSE in April 2019. This new class of ships, known as the Arnala class, is set to replace the aging Abhay class ASW Corvettes currently in service with the Indian Navy. Designed specifically for anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, the ships will also be capable of conducting Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and Mine Laying Operations.
With a length of approximately 77 meters, the ASW SWC ships boast a maximum speed of 25 knots and an impressive endurance of 1,800 nautical miles. The launch of ‘Abhay’ underscores India's commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Notably, the ASW SWC ships are designed with over 80% indigenous content, fostering local manufacturing and generating employment opportunities while enhancing the nation’s defence capabilities.
