Kohima, December 20, 2024: The Nagaland unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a strong statement condemning the alleged behaviour of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi towards Smti S. Phangnon Konyak, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland. The party described the incident as a violation of parliamentary decorum and an insult to the dignity of women, particularly representatives from the Northeast.
In a press release dated 20th December 2024, the BJP Nagaland State expressed outrage over the “disgraceful behaviour” that they claim was directed towards Smti Konyak in the Lok Sabha. Terming the actions as an affront to the people of Nagaland, the BJP called it an example of the “deep-seated disregard for the rights and dignity of women” allegedly harboured by Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party.
The statement further alleged that the incident highlighted a pattern of animosity by the Congress leadership towards BJP MPs. It also drew attention to two BJP MPs who were reportedly injured during the altercation.
“The reprehensible behaviour is unbecoming of an elected representative and goes against the principles of non-violence and respect that our democracy upholds. It is also a stark indication of the animosity the Congress Party harbours towards BJP MPs,” the statement read.
BJP Nagaland reiterated its solidarity with Smti Phangnon Konyak and demanded an “immediate and unconditional apology” from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party. The party also urged the authorities to take strict action to prevent such incidents in the future and maintain the sanctity of democratic institutions.
The BJP appealed to the public to condemn the alleged misconduct and unite against any form of intimidation or disrespect towards women and elected representatives.
The incident has sparked widespread discussions about parliamentary decorum and the treatment of women representatives, especially those from the Northeast, within India’s political landscape. Congress leaders are yet to issue a formal response to the BJP’s accusations.(pr)
