India and Sri Lanka recently carried out their annual naval exercise, SLINEX 24 (Sri Lanka-India Exercise 2024), from December 17 to December 20, 2024, in Visakhapatnam. The exercise was organized by the Eastern Naval Command and took place in two parts – the Harbour Phase (December 17–18) and the Sea Phase (December 19–20).
India was represented by INS Sumitra from the Eastern Fleet, accompanied by a Special Forces team. Sri Lanka participated with SLNS Sayura, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, which also had a Special Forces team onboard.
The exercise began on December 17 with an opening ceremony, followed by the Harbour Phase, where the two navies engaged in professional discussions and social interactions to build better coordination.
The Sea Phase started on December 19 and included various activities such as joint Special Forces operations, gun firings, communication drills, navigation exercises, seamanship tasks, and helicopter operations. These exercises demonstrated the strong teamwork and operational capabilities of both navies.
The SLINEX series, which started in 2005, has been a key part of the partnership between India and Sri Lanka. SLINEX 24 not only strengthened the friendship between the two countries but also promoted a safer and rule-based maritime environment. It aligns with India’s vision of "Security and Growth for All in the Region" (SAGAR) and highlights the importance of regional cooperation for peace and stability in the Indian Ocean.
This year’s SLINEX was a step forward in ensuring closer collaboration and enhanced security in the region, reinforcing the strong bond between the two neighboring nations. (PR)
