VARUNA 2025: India and France Conduct High-Intensity Naval Drills in the Arabian Sea
The exercise also focused on anti-submarine warfare, with submarines and frigates from both nations working together to improve underwater threat detection and response.
The Indian Navy and the French Navy successfully conducted the annual naval exercise VARUNA 2025 from March 19 to 22, reaffirming their strong partnership and commitment to maritime security. This exercise helped both navies work together more effectively and improve their ability to handle complex situations at sea.
VARUNA 2025 included several advanced training sessions in different areas. One of the highlights was the air defence exercise, where Rafale-M fighter jets from the French Navy and MiG-29K aircraft from the Indian Navy worked together to practice responding to aerial threats. These drills helped improve coordination between the two forces in handling air attacks.
Another key part of the exercise was anti-submarine warfare training. Indian submarines and anti-submarine frigates from both navies practiced detecting and countering underwater threats. This improved their ability to operate in underwater environments and work together efficiently.
In addition, surface warfare drills were conducted, where the navies practiced coordinated movements and simulated combat situations, demonstrating their combined strength. The exercise also included Replenishment at Sea (RAS) operations, where fleet tankers from both nations worked together to resupply ships, ensuring they could operate for long periods without returning to port.
VARUNA 2025 achieved a higher level of coordination than previous editions, reinforcing the strong relationship between India and France. The training provided valuable experience, encouraged the exchange of knowledge, and improved the ability of both navies to operate smoothly in challenging maritime environments.
Since its beginning, the VARUNA exercise has been a major part of India-France defence cooperation. Both countries are dedicated to keeping global sea lanes secure and working together to address maritime security challenges. Through joint initiatives like VARUNA, India, and France continue to strengthen their defence ties and ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific region. (PR)
