The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) held their second meeting at the ICG Headquarters in New Delhi. This meeting was part of the ongoing cooperation between the two organizations, based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in August 2023.
The meeting focused on improving cooperation in important areas like Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), Maritime Law Enforcement, Marine Pollution Response, and Capacity Building. The discussions were led by Inspector General Anupam Rai from ICG and Rear Admiral Edgar L. Ybanez from PCG.
Both Coast Guards discussed ways to improve joint SAR operations to respond quickly to maritime emergencies. They also discussed how to work together on fighting crimes at sea, such as smuggling, trafficking, and illegal fishing.
Another key topic was marine pollution. The two Coast Guards emphasized the importance of working together to reduce pollution at sea, through training and sharing resources. They also agreed on the need for capacity-building programs, including joint exercises and training, to improve their skills and ability to work together.
During the visit from December 8-12, 2024, the PCG delegation also met with officials from the Department of Defence Production to learn about India’s shipbuilding capabilities, as part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
The MoU between the two Coast Guards reflects their shared goal of maintaining a secure and clean maritime environment in the Indo-Pacific region. This meeting further strengthened the partnership between the two organizations and will help address maritime challenges in the region. (PR)
