The Indian Army's Ibex Brigade has been conducting an intensive search and rescue operation for over 24 hours following a massive avalanche in Mana, Uttarakhand. Battling extreme weather and relentless snowfall, more than 150 personnel from the Assam Regiment and Garhwal Scouts are leading the efforts to locate and evacuate those trapped under the snow.
Initial reports indicated that 55 laborers were caught in the avalanche. As of last night, 33 had been found safe. Today, the rescue teams have successfully recovered 15 more individuals, including one in critical condition. The search for the remaining seven is ongoing, with advanced equipment such as engineering plant machinery, avalanche rescue radars, and helicopters being deployed to aid the mission.
On-site Indian Army doctors have carried out emergency life-saving procedures for those in dire need of medical assistance. Helicopter operations from the Joshimath helipad remain in full swing, with eight aircraft from the Indian Army Aviation and Indian Air Force engaged in evacuation efforts. A total of 19 individuals have been airlifted from Mana to Joshimath so far.
Senior military officials, including the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Central Command, the General Officer Commanding of the Uttar Bharat Area, and the Director General of Border Roads, are overseeing the rescue mission to ensure maximum efficiency and coordination.
Despite challenging conditions, the Indian Army remains unwavering in its commitment to saving lives.
