The ninth edition of the India-Australia Defence Policy Talks took place in New Delhi on March 17, 2025. This meeting was an important step in strengthening defence relations between the two countries. The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary Shri Amitabh Prasad, while Mr. Bernard Philip, First Assistant Secretary of the International Policy Division, Department of Defence Australia, headed the Australian team.
Both countries acknowledged the steady progress in their defence partnership. They discussed the increasing number and complexity of joint military exercises and exchanges, highlighting key achievements such as finalizing important agreements and actively participating in each other’s defence trade expos. These developments have further deepened their cooperation in defence matters.
The discussions also covered past engagements, including the second Ministerial Foreign and Defence Ministers' 2+2 Dialogue in November 2023, the Secretary-level inter-sessional 2+2 consultations in October 2024, and the second Annual Leaders’ Summit in November 2024. The main focus areas included improving maritime security, sharing critical defence information, collaborating in defence industries, and advancing science and technology in defence. Both sides also exchanged views on important regional and global security issues.
India and Australia reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific region. They discussed preparations for the next 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, which will take place in Australia in 2025. Both countries emphasized the importance of creating a long-term vision for defence and security cooperation, as envisioned by their Prime Ministers. This partnership aims to strengthen security in the region and support mutual strategic interests.
Another key discussion point was enhancing defence industry collaboration. Both countries encouraged their respective agencies to accelerate cooperation in defence science and technology. They also agreed to improve coordination in maritime, land, and air operations while working with other international partners to strengthen regional security.
Over the years, defence collaboration has become a crucial part of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The eighth edition of the Defence Policy Talks, held in 2023, played an essential role in reinforcing bilateral defence ties.
As part of this visit, the Australian delegation will tour Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd in Mumbai. Additionally, the Australian co-chair will meet India’s Defence Secretary, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, on March 18, 2025, to further enhance defence cooperation between the two nations.
The India-Australia Defence Policy Talks continue to be a vital platform for fostering trust, improving cooperation, and building a stronger and more secure partnership between the two countries for regional and global peace. (PR)
