The Mizo National Front (MNF) has called for the immediate resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, holding him responsible for the worsening ethnic clashes in Manipur. In a press statement issued today by VL Krosshnehzova, General Secretary of the MNF's Media and Publicity Department, the party also demanded the Central Government to act decisively to resolve the crisis and restore peace and justice.
The MNF stressed the destructive impact of the ongoing violence in Manipur, especially on the Zofate community. As of November 22, 2024, the party reported that 219 lives had been lost, 360 churches destroyed, and over 7,000 homes burned down. Around 41,425 people have been displaced, and compelled to live as refugees within their own country.
“This is a humanitarian disaster,” the statement read. “Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s inaction and abuse of power have not only failed to handle the crisis but have also exacerbated the suffering of innocent people. His continuation in office is both untenable and shameful.”
The MNF voiced grave concern over the erosion of human rights and attacks on religious sanctuaries, which it defined as a betrayal of India’s foundational democratic and secular values. The party called for immediate intervention by the Central Government to ensure the restoration of peace and the protection of democratic rights in Manipur.
The MNF hailed the Mizoram government, led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, for its outstanding efforts in aiding those displaced by the violence. The government has provided food, shelter, and education to refugees from Manipur, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. MNF leaders and MLAs have also visited Manipur to extend direct support to the impacted communities.
The party praised Mizoram MP (Rajya Sabha) K. Vanlalvena for raising the issue in Parliament, ensuring the voices of the Zofate community are heard at the national level. It also recognized the significant contributions of churches, student unions, and voluntary groups in Mizoram for their continuous relief efforts.
The MNF encouraged all Zofate to unite in protecting their community’s lives and livelihoods during these trying times. The party also called on the Mizoram government to continue its staunch support for the displaced and to fulfill promises made with integrity and patriotism.
“This is a time for resilience, compassion, and solidarity,” the statement highlighted. “We will support any measure by the Mizoram government that prioritizes the welfare of Zofate across the region.”
As the situation unfolds, the MNF vowed to stand firm in advocating for justice and unity, demanding both state and central authorities to take immediate and meaningful action. (PR)
