At a press conference in Delhi, senior Congress leader Rajiv Shukla criticized the BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for ignoring the needs of Delhi’s people. He blamed them for fighting over credit for projects started by the Congress, instead of doing meaningful work to improve the city.
Shri Shukla, a Rajya Sabha MP and AICC in-charge of Himachal Pradesh Congress said the constant clashes between BJP and AAP have caused harm to Delhi’s development and made life harder for residents, especially the poor.
Shri Shukla said both BJP and AAP have a habit of claiming credit for work done by Congress. He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took credit for projects started under former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, including the Chandrayaan mission. “Instead of helping people, they focus on taking false credit,” he added.
Delhi’s air has become dangerously polluted, making it hard for people to breathe, Shri Shukla said. He also mentioned that the Yamuna River is so dirty now that people were stopped from performing Chhath Puja, even though Congress had built special areas for the festival in the past.
The Congress leader highlighted a major issue with housing for the poor. Under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, the Congress Government had built over 52,000 flats in Delhi at a cost of ₹2,415 crore. Despite 35,000 flats being ready for years, only 4,883 have been given to people, while more than 30,000 are still sitting empty.
He blamed the BJP and AAP for fighting and ignoring the problem. He also said that 16,600 additional flats, which are now ready, are being ruined because no one is taking responsibility for allotting them.
Shri Shukla said the Delhi High Court had directed the government to quickly give these flats to deserving families back in September 2023. However, BJP and AAP have not followed these orders.
With Delhi Assembly elections coming up on February 5, 2025, Shri Shukla promised that Congress would bring real change if voted to power. Some of their key promises include:
- ₹2,500 per month for women under the Pyari Didi Yojna.
- ₹25 lakh health insurance for every family.
- ₹8,500 monthly scholarships for unemployed, educated youth.
- Cooking gas cylinders for ₹500, along with a free ration kit.
- 300 units of free electricity per household.
“People are tired of BJP and AAP making their lives harder. They trust Congress to deliver on its promises and work for everyone’s welfare,” Shri Shukla said.
The Congress party is gearing up to win back Delhi’s trust and fix the issues caused by years of neglect.(PR)
