As the nation prepares to honour the brave soldiers who fought in the historic Battle of Walong during the 1962 Sino-Indian War, the Indian Army is set to commemorate the 62nd Walong Day with a series of month-long events. These celebrations will begin on October 17, 2024, and continue until November 14, 2024, marking a significant occasion to remember the soldiers who defended India's Eastern front with unparalleled bravery.

This year’s commemorations will feature a variety of activities aimed at engaging local communities and keeping the memory of the fallen heroes alive. The events include white water rafting, motorcycle rallies, bicycle rallies, battlefield treks, adventure treks, and a half marathon, all designed to symbolize the adventurous and resilient spirit of the Indian Army operating in the challenging terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.

In addition to these activities, medical and veterinary camps will be set up to provide much-needed services to remote villages in the region, strengthening the bond between the Army and the local communities.

The highlight of the month-long commemoration will be on Walong Day, November 14, 2024, with the grand inauguration of the newly renovated Walong War Memorial. This memorial stands as a tribute to the valiant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending the nation. A solemn wreath-laying ceremony will be held, followed by a poignant retelling of the battle. Traditional performances by the Mishmi and Meyor dancers will add a cultural dimension to the occasion, showcasing the local heritage and its connection to the region's history.

Moreover, the Shaurya Sthal at Lama Spur and key infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and security in the border areas will also be inaugurated during the final day's events. The Army will also host a special ceremony to honour the families of war heroes, veterans, and porters who played vital roles during the 1962 operations, underlining the Army's continued commitment to recognizing the contributions of all involved.

The Indian Army’s initiative for this 62nd Walong Day celebration not only serves as a tribute to the past but also as an inspiration for the current and future generations to uphold the values of courage, sacrifice, and service to the nation.(PR)
