On December 3, 2024, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), directed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved major defence purchases worth over Rs. 21,772 crores. These approvals aim to support the capabilities of the Indian Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
The DAC approved the purchase of 31 new Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (NWJFACs) for the Indian Navy. These boats will be used for tasks such as management, patrolling, and search andrescue missions near the coast. They will also help in anti-piracy operations, especially around India’s island regions. In addition, the council approved the purchase of 120 Fast Interceptor Crafts (FIC-1), which will be used to protect important naval ships like aircraft carriers and destroyers, as well as defend coastal areas.
The DAC also approved the purchase of an Electronic Warfare Suite (EWS) for the Su-30 MKI aircraft. This new system will protect the aircraft from enemy radar and weapons, making it safer during missions.
For the Indian Coast Guard, the DAC approved the purchase of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) M (MR). These helicopters will help in improving coastal security and management. Additionally, the council approved to upgrade of the engines of T-72 and T-90 tanks, BMP vehicles, and Sukhoi fighter jets, ensuring they remain in service for many more years.
These new additions and upgrades are part of India’s efforts to improve its defence forces and keep the country safe. (PR)
