Karwar: In a landmark step towards enhancing India’s maritime defence infrastructure, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated critical facilities worth ₹2,000 crore at the Karwar Naval Base today. This major development falls under the ambit of the Indian Navy’s ambitious Project Seabird, aimed at bolstering India's naval prowess and self-reliance in defence capabilities.
During the high-profile inauguration, the Raksha Mantri unveiled nine state-of-the-art piers, cutting-edge marine utilities, advanced trunk facilities, and 480 modern dwelling units designed for Sailors and Defence Civilians. The newly commissioned infrastructure is expected to play a pivotal role in operational readiness, logistical efficiency, and the welfare of naval personnel.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Rajnath Singh emphasized the strategic importance of Project Seabird, calling it a “giant leap in India’s quest for a secure and self-reliant maritime frontier.” He noted that the new infrastructure not only boosts India's naval deterrence but also aligns with the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
"The Indian Navy is rapidly transforming into a future-ready force, and Karwar is emerging as a central pillar of this maritime resurgence,” said the Raksha Mantri. “This expansion ensures that our naval assets remain mission-capable and agile, ready to respond to any challenge in the Indian Ocean Region.”
Project Seabird, one of India's largest naval infrastructure projects, aims to transform Karwar into a premier naval base equipped to support aircraft carriers, submarines, and a full spectrum of naval operations. With today’s inauguration, the project has achieved a crucial milestone in its phased development.
Senior naval officers, officials from the Ministry of Defence, and personnel from the Indian Navy attended the inauguration ceremony.
This momentous development reinforces India’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime interests and maintaining peace and stability in the region through enhanced operational capabilities and indigenously developed infrastructure. (PR)
