The Dimapur-Kohima Railway Project is facing delays due to several issues. During a recent meeting of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) in Lumding, Assam, Smti. Akuonuo Miachieo, Secretary of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) and a DRUCC member, discussed these problems and suggested solutions.
Land Encroachment Slowing Expansion
A major issue is that private settlers have occupied railway land, leading to legal disputes and compensation claims. This has made it difficult to expand Dimapur railway station. Miachieo suggested that the Railway Board and the State Government should work together to resolve these issues quickly.
Short Stoppage Time at Dimapur Station
Trains currently stop at Dimapur station for only 2 to 5 minutes, which is too short for passengers to board and exit comfortably. Due to limited parking space, many trains are held in Assam before entering Dimapur. Miachieo proposed increasing the stoppage time to at least 15-20 minutes and expanding the station’s platform and parking facilities.
Security Issues Delaying Construction
Construction work near Tunnel No. 6 and Tunnel No. 7 in Tsiepama village has been repeatedly disrupted due to security concerns. Miachieo stressed the need for better security to protect workers and ensure smooth progress.
Delays in Infrastructure and Rising Costs
Land acquisition problems and rising compensation costs have also delayed key structures like tunnels, road over bridges (ROB), and road under bridges (RUB). Contractors are struggling with delayed payments. Miachieo urged authorities to speed up land acquisition and release funds on time to avoid further delays and cost increases.
Better Ticketing and Seating Needed
With more passengers using Dimapur station, there is a need for better ticketing systems and more seating. Miachieo suggested improving the ticketing process to reduce last-minute rush and make travel more convenient.
The DRUCC meeting ended with a call for railway authorities and state agencies to work together to solve these problems. The proposed steps aim to complete the Dimapur-Kohima Railway Project as soon as possible while improving facilities at Dimapur railway station. (PR)
