The much-anticipated bilateral naval exercise, SLINEX 2024 (Sri Lanka–India Exercise), will commence in Visakhapatnam under the auspices of the Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command. Running from 17 to 20 December, the exercise underscores the growing maritime cooperation between the two nations, a partnership that has been steadily fostered since the inaugural edition in 2005.
The exercise, which is divided into two distinct phases, began with the Harbour Phase on 17 December and will transition into the Sea Phase from 19 to 20 December. The Harbour Phase will involve professional and social engagements aimed at enhancing mutual understanding between the Indian and Sri Lankan naval forces. The Sea Phase will see dynamic joint operations, including Special Forces exercises, gun firings, communication drills, navigation evolutions, seamanship practices, and helicopter operations.
The opening ceremony of SLINEX 2024 was held earlier today, marking the official start of the Harbour Phase. This year’s exercise sees the participation of Indian Naval Ship INS Sumitra, a Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel from the Eastern Fleet, alongside a Special Forces contingent. The Sri Lankan Navy is represented by SLNS Sayura, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, also accompanied by an embarked Special Forces team.
SLINEX is not just a bilateral engagement; it is a reflection of the deep trust and mutual respect shared by the navies of India and Sri Lanka. Over the years, this exercise has evolved, enabling the Nation to achieve greater interoperability and address shared maritime challenges effectively.
As the exercise progresses into the Sea Phase, both navies aim to test and refine their operational strategies while exchanging best practices. The joint manoeuvres planned for the next few days reflect the expanding scope of SLINEX, which has grown to include a variety of tactical and operational scenarios.
The 2024 edition of SLINEX is expected to further strengthen the maritime ties between the neighboring countries while promoting a safe, secure, and rules-based maritime order in the region. This collaboration highlights the commitment of both nations to maintaining stability and peace in the Indian Ocean region.
SLINEX has become a cornerstone of India-Sri Lanka defense cooperation, emphasizing goodwill and understanding. The ongoing 2024 exercise serves as yet another step toward deepening this vital partnership. (PR)
