Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has shared some important steps the Army is taking to improve its ability to respond to disasters. Speaking at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, General Dwivedi announced that the Army is investing ₹17 crore to improve its Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) and Quick Response medical teams. This investment will help the Army respond more effectively when disasters strike.
In addition, the Army plans to set up 17 special units, called Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) "bricks," across the country. These units will help provide necessary resources and support for rescue operations when disasters occur. General Dwivedi explained, “Sometimes, even though our teams reach the disaster site quickly, we don’t always have the resources needed to carry out the rescue work effectively. These HADR bricks will help fill that gap.”
The Army Chief also emphasized the Army's readiness to act quickly, especially along India’s northern borders, where the Army will be the first to respond to natural disasters. He made it clear that the Army will not wait for permission from local authorities but will instead take immediate action to help those in need.
“Our presence in the northern region means we can respond right away,” General Dwivedi said. “Whenever there’s a need for disaster relief, we’ll be there without delay to provide help.”
