A special flag hoisting ceremony and the inauguration of a 72-foot flag mast took place today at the Batasia War Memorial in Darjeeling. The event was held to honor the bravery and sacrifices of Indian soldiers, especially the Gorkha soldiers. It was organized by the Zila Sainik Board, Darjeeling, with support from the Indian Army, as a way to show the nation’s deep respect and gratitude towards its soldiers.
The Batasia War Memorial, built in 1995, is an important place of remembrance. It stands in a region home to nearly 15,000 army veterans. The memorial features a beautifully designed circular garden with a bronze statue of a soldier standing in salute. With the Darjeeling hills and the Kanchenjunga mountains in the background, the site is a symbol of courage and sacrifice.
Setting up the 72-foot flag mast at this historic site was not easy. The hilly terrain and the need to protect the area’s heritage made construction challenging. However, the project was completed successfully, making it a proud moment for all.
The event was attended by many important guests, including the Governor of West Bengal, Shri C.V. Ananda Bose, who was the Chief Guest. Also present were Lieutenant General Zubin A. Minwalla, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Trishakti Corps, senior army officers, war veterans, Veer Naris (war widows), and state government officials.
The ceremony began with a wreath-laying ceremony to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers. This was followed by the hoisting of the National Flag and the singing of the National Anthem, filling the air with patriotic spirit. The official unveiling of the inauguration stone and the flag mast was a proud and emotional moment, reminding everyone of the sacrifices made by soldiers to protect the country.
A special part of the event was the felicitation ceremony, where Veer Naris and awardees were honored for their contributions and sacrifices. Many people, including citizens, veterans, government officials, and dignitaries, attended the event, making it a heartfelt tribute to the dedication and service of the Indian Army. (PR)
