Normal life in six districts of eastern Nagaland has been thrown into disarray as the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO) called for an indefinite shutdown to amplify its demand for a separate state.
The ENPO's demand revolves around the creation of a distinct 'Frontier Nagaland Territory' state, comprising the districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Noklak, and Shamator. This call for action was issued from ENPO's headquarters in Tuensang district, according to insider sources within the organization.
The shutdown, which commenced recently, has effectively halted the functioning of shops, commercial establishments, and most vehicular movements across the affected districts. However, crucial services such as power, medical assistance, fire services, and emergency aid remain operational, under exemptions declared by ENPO.
The apex body representing eight Naga tribes in the region—Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Sangtam, Tikhir, Yimkhiung, and Eastern Sumi—ENPO has taken a stern stance against political campaigning by any party in the region until their demands are met. This decision has been reinforced through various measures, including the declaration of a "public emergency" on March 5.
Moreover, to underscore their resolve, ENPO previously enforced a 12-hour shutdown on March 8, which has now escalated into a total shutdown until further notice.
While the shutdown grinds daily life to a standstill, ENPO's demand for a separate state resonates deeply within the affected communities. The organization's insistence on territorial integrity and political representation reflects the longstanding aspirations of the Naga populace in eastern Nagaland.
