India took another big step in strengthening its naval power with the launch of Tavasya, a new warship built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). This is the second frigate under Project 1135.6, an initiative focused on boosting India’s defense capabilities. The launch event was held at GSL on March 22, 2025, and was led by Mrs. Neeta Seth in the presence of Shri Sanjay Seth, Hon’ble Raksha Rajya Mantri, and Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. Senior officials from the Indian Navy, the Government of Goa, and GSL also attended the event.

Tavasya is named after the mighty mace of Bhima, one of the greatest warriors from the epic Mahabharata. This name represents the strength and determination of the Indian Navy. The ship is part of an agreement signed on January 25, 2019, between the Ministry of Defence and GSL to build two modern warships under Project 1135.6. The first ship, Triput, was launched earlier on July 23, 2024.

Both Triput and Tavasya are designed to handle different types of threats, including attacks from the sea, underwater, and air. Each ship is about 125 meters long, has a draught of 4.5 meters, and weighs approximately 3,600 tons. With a top speed of 28 knots, these ships are built with stealth technology, advanced weaponry, and high-tech sensors to make them more effective in battle.

As part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) campaign, these ships use a significant amount of Indian-made equipment, weapons, and technology. This effort not only strengthens India's defense industry but also creates jobs and boosts local manufacturing.

The launch of Tavasya marks a proud moment for India's defense sector, showcasing the country's growing ability to build advanced warships. It reinforces the Indian Navy’s readiness to protect the nation’s waters and strengthens India's position as a self-reliant military power. (PR)
