India and the European Union (EU) are taking important steps to strengthen their defence and security ties. Today, India’s Minister of State for Defence, Shri Sanjay Seth, met with Mr. Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defence and Space, in New Delhi.
The main principle of their discussion was improving cooperation between India and the EU in defence and security matters. They particularly show working together in the Indo-Pacific region, an extended area stretching from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, which is crucial for global trade and security. Both sides talked about ways to improve maritime security and communicate important information to provide peace and stability in the region.
Another key topic of the meeting was defence industry cooperation. India is working towards becoming more self-reliant in defence manufacturing, and the EU is willing to collaborate. The leaders explored how European defence companies can take part in collaborative projects and co-produce military equipment in India. This could lead to technology sharing and job creation, benefiting both sides.
They also examined India’s potential participation in the EU’s Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), a European initiative aimed at strengthening defence collaboration among member countries. India’s involvement in such projects could open new opportunities for defence development and creation.
Mr. Andrius Kubilius is visiting India as part of a high-level committee led by the President of the European Commission, along with the College of Commissioners. This visit showcases the growing partnership between India and the EU, as both sides recognize the importance of working together in an increasingly complex global security environment.
